Claim people with sporadic mental health illnesses could miss out under the NDIS

Dignity Party MP Kelly Vincent says people with sporadic mental health illnesses could miss out under the NDIS. The NDIS is expected to cover all South Australians by July next year, providing support to about 32,000 people.

Those with a disability that is likely to be permanent and struggle to take part in everyday activities without assistance can access the scheme, but Ms Vincent says she’s concerned this doesn’t cover those whose mental health issues are sporadic:

“It’s important to remember that farmers in particular not to be too blunt or crass about it, but often have the means to self-harm with firearms. They need to pay investment face to face really intensive support for people facing with depression, anxiety or something more chronic is absolutely vital.”

“You might be able to travel along very well for six months, a year, even two years, at a time and then have quite a severe episode or your health might become poorer and you might need an intensive intervention for a shorter period of time that then enables you to get well again and get back into work, into community life; so I think it’s a really unfortunate and naïve decision.”
