National Disability Award winners announced

Dignity for Disability MLC Kelly Vincent is excited to congratulate the winners of the National Disability Awards which were announced yesterday in Canberra.

In the lead up to the International Day of People with Disabilities on December 3, nine individuals and organisations have been recognised by the Federal Government.

“It is fantastic to pause for a moment and celebrate the wonderful work being done by people with disabilities in Australia and also to congratulate those working on behalf of the disability community,” said Ms Vincent.

“All of these award winners have made a change. Some of them have changed individual lives and some of them have changed national policy, but they have all gone out of their way to do something extraordinary.”

South Australian-based ABC Radio journalist Nance Haxton took out the Yooralla Media Award for Excellence for her persistent coverage of issues affecting people with disabilities.

“Nance has consistently worked to make the Australian public aware of matters of importance for the disability community which might otherwise be buried,” said Ms Vincent. “She is an outstanding journalist, and her skills have made her an excellent advocate for the disability sector.”
