Government has blood on their hands over rail accidents

04/10/2013

Dignity for Disability MLC Kelly Vincent has expressed outrage at the Government inaction on safety that may have contributed to the latest rail accident that has seen a young man injured.

“The Labor Government has blood on its hands and a lot of explaining to do after a pedestrian and rail accident late this afternoon at Lynton Station,” says Ms Vincent.

“Dignity for Disability has repeatedly called for increased pedestrian safety at this station, and for clear line marking on the western side of the Belair line at all crossings.

“I have written to Minister Chloe Fox and asked questions in parliament, and I find her lack of action on this simply unconscionable.

“The Lynton station is used by many people with intellectual disabilities as it is adjacent to Bedford Group’s Balyana facility, meaning some commuters using this station have increased vulnerability.

“This is the second time a young person has been struck by an Adelaide Metro train this week and I call on the government to take urgent action.

“Slick, expensive advertising campaigns such as the 1,000 horses crusade are no replacement for good old fashioned safety measures such as line markings and barriers being installed at railway stations.

“It is time that Transport Services Minister Chloe Fox admits our metropolitan train stations are not safe and installs automatic gates in addition to ensuring basic line markings have been done at all stations,” said Ms Vincent.
