Elder abuse investigation passes SA Parliament
Dignity for Disability has ensured the incidence of elder abuse in South Australia will be examined after a motion passed the Legislative Council tonight with unanimous support.
“Dignity for Disability has called for the abuse of older South Australians to be investigated by the Parliament’s Social Development Committee. I thank colleagues for their support; it’s important that we all recognise the clear need for this inquiry,” said MP Kelly Vincent.
“It’s an absolute disgrace that older South Australians are facing physical, emotional, financial, sexual, psychological, social and chemical abuse and neglect at high rates on a daily basis.
“We need to send a message as a Parliament and as a society that human worth does not diminish with age.”
Ms Vincent said she is particularly concerned that older people may be more susceptible to online and telemarketing scams
“Because generally some older people do not use many modern technologies like email and social media in everyday life, they may not be as quick to recognise dodgy offers,” said Ms Vincent.
