DEMOCRACY SHOULD BE ACCESSIBLE TO ALL

29/11/2012

Dignity for Disability President Rick Neagle today launched his party’s new website, making one of a few political websites that meet World Wide Web (W3C) Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG 2.0).

“Australian society and political systems are inaccessible enough without political parties creating barriers to participation,” says Rick Neagle.

“People with disabilities face daily challenges in accessing information and services – this often includes websites.  Many government websites are not accessible, contain broken links or contain confusing or out of date information.

“Dignity for Disability urges all government and political party websites to be accessible to everyone by the end of 2014, not just those without disabilities.

“Increasingly, people rely on information technology and websites to access information in their daily environment.  If all of the community can’t access what’s happening in the political sphere via the web, then they’re shut out of democratic processes.

“We want to ensure everyone in society knows what is happening and everyone gets a say in the running of the country.

“Whether you have a visual disability, or the need for plain English text, political parties should be able to cater for your needs,” said Mr Neagle.
